Instagram Following Not in Chronological Order? How to Still See Recent Follows (2026)

November 2026•5 min read•By Similarity API Team

Quick answer

Instagram's following and follower lists are no longer shown in the order people followed. The top of the list doesn't mean "most recent", and the order can change each time you open it. Instagram also never shows follow dates. You can still see who someone recently followed, but only from the day you start tracking: save their list now, compare it later, and every new name is a new follow.

Is the Instagram following list in chronological order?

No. For a long time, people used a simple trick: open someone's Following list, and the accounts at the top were the ones they followed most recently. That no longer works. Today the list is sorted by Instagram's own ranking, which can depend on who is looking and on how the person interacts with each account. Open the same list twice and you may see a different order, or even slightly different names.

Why the old tricks don't work anymore

  • Reading the top of the list: the top is a ranking now, not a timeline. A follow from years ago can sit above one from yesterday.
  • Switching to desktop: the browser version shows the same ranked list.
  • Scrolling or refreshing until it "settles": the order doesn't settle. It can come back different every time.
  • Following them from a second account: this doesn't unlock any history, and they may notice.
  • Old "recent follow" apps that read the order: many of these quietly stopped being accurate once the order stopped meaning time.

Why screenshots don't work

Taking screenshots of their Following list and comparing them later sounds like a fix, but it breaks down fast. The order shuffles between views, so the same names land in different places on every screenshot. Lists with hundreds of accounts mean dozens of screenshots to scan by eye, and it's easy to miss a name that quietly disappeared. That's exactly the comparison a tracker does for you, name by name, on a schedule.

So how do you see who someone recently followed?

By comparison. If you have a saved copy of someone's following list from last week, and you look again today, any name that wasn't there before is a new follow. Any name that disappeared is an unfollow. That's all a tracker does, automatically and on a schedule.

That's also why you have to start tracking first. Nobody outside Instagram can see the order or dates of follows that happened before the first saved copy. The earlier you start, the sooner you'll know about the next follow.

How tracking works

  1. First snapshot. Paste a public username into the Instagram Following Tracker. We save their full Following and Followers lists. You can already see who doesn't follow them back.
  2. Next check. The lists are read again. The first update arrives after 24 hours, then weekly, or daily on the Daily plan.
  3. Compare. We compare the new lists with the saved ones. Names that appear to be missing are double-checked before we call them an unfollow, so a shuffled or partial list doesn't create false alarms.
  4. See the changes. Each update lists new following, unfollowed, new followers and lost followers, with the date of the check that first saw them. We email you when results are ready.

What an update looks like: every new follow, unfollow and follower change, dated by check.

The date on a new follow is the date of the check that found it, not the exact minute it happened, because Instagram doesn't publish that for anyone.

What no tool can honestly tell you

  • The exact time someone followed an account.
  • The real follow order before you started tracking.
  • Anything about private accounts.

If an app promises any of these, ask how it knows.
